Speed up your Windows Vista PC Easily

Owning a Vista laptop, I know how annoying it is when it starts slowing down to the point where my dad’s old Windows 98 is twice as fast. So I decided to write a short tutorial on tips to speed up your Vista PC. First of all, open your Start Menu, find the “Computer” link, and right click on it. Click “Properties”, and then click “Advanced System Settings”. Make sure you’re at the “Advanced” tab, and open “setting” in the performance section. The first tab you’ll be looking at is the Visual Effects tab. There you can either choose a setting to adjust your computer for its best performance, best appearance. (Or let Windows choose what is best for your computer, but that’s basically the same as the Best Appearance setting. To make your computer’s appearance still look good while speeding up your computer, first click “Best Performance” and then click on the check boxes for:

    Show thumbnails instead of Icons
    Show Window Contents while dragging
    Smooth edges of Screen Fonts
Use Drop Shadows for Icon labels on desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Finally, install one of the Vista Performance updates, here are the links:

Update for Windows Vista (KB938979) – This is a performance update. Install this update to improve the performance of Windows Vista in certain scenarios. Or download for x64 based systems here.

Also get the Reliability update if you haven’t (Not all Window updates are automatically sent to your PC):

There seems to be another way at speeding up your PC by using your hard drive’s memory as RAM, but I’m trying it out on my computer first to make sure nothing goes wrong. I’ll post that as soon as I can.
